BackPak Buddies
What are Backpak Buddies? One of our members, a teacher in a local school system shared with us that on Fridays she noticed several students asking others for their left-over sandwiches and fruit. They quietly stuffed this food into their backpacks. The observant teacher questioned a couple of students and found they were dreading weekends because they knew they would be hungry.
We contacted the school counselor of the elementary school to give us a count of the number of children she targeted as needing food on the weekend. It is hard to believe, but some parents who are needy refuse to fill out the paperwork for the government subsidized food program.
Each Friday afternoon, the counselor secretly places the grocery bags in each child's backpack while they are out of the room. This is all confidential and we do not know any of their names. At the beginning of the year, letters are sent home asking parents for their permission for this project. Confidentiality is stressed and students are told not to open their backpacks until they arrive home.
What do we pack every weekend? We provide enough food for 6 meals. This includes 2 cereal boxes, 1 instant oatmeal, granola or fruit bar, raisins, 2 Easy Mac pkgs, 2 Ramen Noodle pkgs, 1 can of meat like Beef-A-Roni, 2 fruit cups, 1 applesauce, peanut-butter and cheese crackers, and 1 snack. This food is then packed in a plastic grocery bag. (Remember this has to fit in a child's backpack!)
Care / Share Mission assists in serving those less fortunate through working in our local food pantry. Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Monday and Thursday, delivering food to clients and/or stocking shelves. Other volunteers spend time unloading trucks, making repairs or filling in where needed. You can help by volunteering or donating food. Call the church office if you'd like to help.
